How to position the bone marrow aspirate needle

Mar 24, 2022

Commonly selected puncture sites in clinical practice:

Anterior superior iliac spine: The puncture point is usually 1 to 2 cm behind and above the anterior superior iliac spine, where the bone surface is flat, easy to fix, and easy to operate.

Posterior superior iliac spine: located on both sides of the sacral spine, the bony protrusion above the buttocks.

Fix the bone marrow puncture needle fixer at an appropriate length (about 1.5cm for iliac puncture, and it can be appropriately lengthened for obese patients), fix the skin at the puncture site with the thumb and index finger of the left hand, and pierce the needle vertically on the bone surface with the right hand. After touching the bone, rotate left and right, and slowly drill into the bone. When the resistance disappears and a feeling of emptiness is felt, and the puncture needle has been fixed in the bone, it means that it has entered the bone marrow cavity.
